Dream Job: Buyer for Anthropologie

I recently started watching Man Shops Globe on the Sundance Channel (catch it Wednesday nights at 10 pm) and I am hooked.

The show follows Keith Johnson, the buyer-at-large for Anthropologie (amazing!!) as he travels the world in search of the coolest, most unique home accessories, furniture, fabric and other cool finds to furnish and sell at the Anthropologie stores around the country and apparently soon around the world.

So far I've watched him shop the biggest and best antique shops, markets and bazaars in France and Turkey. This photo was from last week's episode, when Keith was in Turkey shopping for fabrics.

He pulled out this gorgeous antique suzani...

Look closely at the coloring, the darker greyish spots used to be black but faded so much over such a long time, it's completely transformed itself into something new.

Johnson picked up on that and immediately knew it would be an inspiration piece. He then set out to find additional fabrics that could be transformed into something else...reinvented and sold in the stores.

His solution? He commissioned a local seamstress in Turkey to transform old textiles into one-of-a-kind pillows. They are extraordinary, I couldn't find any still photos online but I remembered that some of the pillows were featured in this Elle Decor article that ran about Johnson's apartment in the October issue.

Here's a photo, although the pillows are a little hard to see...they are there in the center of the yellow sofa:

How beautiful are those pillows? You can check out the whole gallery of photos here. And I recommend you do because his apartment is so funky, fresh and worldly, you'll want to move right in.

I think they are also being sold in stores...I'll have to investigate and scoop one up!

Halloween Tips and Tricks

Halloween is just a few weeks away! I know I'm excited, how about you?

I wanted to share some of the new Halloween articles I recently produced, including the "True Blood" Party for Celebrations.com.

And have you checked out AOL Home's newest site: Holidash.com yet? I was proud to contribute this DIY Haunted House story. My friend is one of the editors and she is doing a great job!

Oh, I also recently put together this small, sparkly display in my home. What do you think?

I propped up two glittery skulls from the dollar store on a pair of purple zebra-print candle holders I already owned. I added faux plastic skeleton hands that I also found at the dollar store. To finish, I covered my lampshade with faux spiderweb and a plastic spider or two. Kinda fun I think.

Don't get me wrong, I love to decorate but when you're busy writing about it all day long, sometimes it's nice to find cheap, quick and easy ideas for your own home!

What do you think?

Farmhouse Dreams

If I were to ever own a country house (and my plan is to do so one day), I would want it to look like this quaint little cottage I spotted online at nytimes.com today...completely charming on the outside...

...and bursting with amazing collections on the inside!

The first photo shows off the homeowner's collection of vintage postcards of Pompeian ruins and the second photo (my favorite shot) captures his amazing mercury glass collection. Swoon!

This amazing cottage belongs to former NYC residents Sean Scherer and Mark Meyer. Their ENTIRE home is featured in a new slideshow in the Home & Garden section at nytimes.com this week. Go check it out. You'll be glad you did.

Shiny + New: Lonny Magazine

I spent a few hours Sunday evening curled up with a cup of tea, my computer and the brand new online magazine: Lonny. Online magazine? Yes and this paper-loving, magazine-obsessed girl loved it.

Don't get me wrong, nothing makes my pulse race like cracking open the pages of a thick glossy magazine. However, we must acknowledge that technology is here :) and well, it's chasing after the publishing industry faster and faster each day, especially the shelter titles.

My hats off to Michelle Adams and Patrick Cline, Lonny's founders, for their experiment. And thank you for doing such a great job, its evident how much thought, passion and hard work went into this issue!

The layout is just like a traditional mag with full-page ads, gorgeous photos, product picks and inspiring stories. Plus, being an online pub, you get the benefit of rolling your cursor over a special something that caught your eye and clicking away to its web site. I found many new online shops and blogs (RedStamp.com, DeSmitten and Vicky's Yard Sale to name a few) that I will be visiting this week.

The first issue was inspiring, creative and a bit of an homage to Domino, which was so lovely to see. Living through a magazine shutting down myself, I know how heartbreaking it is to say goodbye to your friends, co-workers and the publication that brought you all together. It must have been so wonderful for Michelle and Patrick to catch up with their old pals and show off their amazing homes.

You must check out this exciting new publication for yourself. Its got style and smarts and I can't wait for future issues...keep them coming!

Happy Anniversary, Elle Decor!

Speaking of Victoria Hagan...

I just read over at Coco + Kelly (one of my new favorite blogs) that the cover image of the new Elle Decor book: Style and Substance: The Best of Elle Decor , is of a room designed by Victoria.

The image was the best selling cover in all of Elle Decor's 20 fabulous years.

20 years? Yep, Elle Decor is celebrating 20 fantastic years of bringing us gorgeous design. They're celebrating in a big way with this new book. Can't wait to check it out.

In my opinion Elle Decor is one of the last great shelter mags out there. Margaret Russell and her staff do it right. I am always struck by their cover images and the gorgeous stories inside. I love how they bring amazing design from around the world right into my little hands.

Thank you and happy anniversary!
